Prom Queen of Second Place

"I'm gonna leave how I came, screaming, covered in blood. Died once, born twice, both times we knuckled up, along side our people we gonna struggle with love. So struggle with love." - Blue Scholars.
YES. Let's talk about THE STRUGGLE.

The B-Movie Odyssey

As you may know, I was the AD on the feature film The Last Video Store in the summer with the House of Heathens. It was a brief and intense shooting schedule and a lot of fun falling into the imaginative storyworld created by Tim Rutherford, Cody Kennedy and Kevin Martin.

Get Fiercely Focused

“Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential.”
- Winston Churchill

I am feeling INSPIRED. November is definitely the time to tear it up - as in hunker down, get focused and kick the shit out of some creative projects.

Eyes Wide Open

First of all, a big thank you to every single person who read my previous post and shared it with their community - all seven hundred of you! I am thrilled by the passionate response. A special thanks to Reel West Magazine for taking an interest! Now that we know of our challenges in the Edmonton Film & TV Industry - it's time to start talking about solutions and be prepared to enact them.

What does that mean? It means YOU need to show up. As a community, we need engagement, out-of-the-box thinking and a honest appraisal of our individual and collective needs. It's time for an inventory. If you don't like what's happening, what are you doing about it? If you want a career in the Alberta Film & TV Industry, how are you showing up? Are you involved? Are you an active member of the community? Understand I'm not asking if you "make" something, but are you present and connected?

Influential members of our community will be gathering for a kind of "town hall meeting" to discuss solutions. We need YOU there to articulate what you need to thrive in this community. So please take some time and prepare yourself. We can all identify what's not working, but let's take a step together toward a positive solution. Stay tuned...

A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes

I really like the juxtaposition of the post's title and this photo.

Hey everyone! I want you to meet Kendyl Lauzon. She is a local artist - strike that - she is the most amazing animator I have ever met and I want to own/wear/display everything that she creates. EVERYTHING. I met her through the #screamqueenhalloween Instagram challenge (find her @BreakfastJones) and I was totally taken by her unique style and boundless creativity.

Spooky Duets

My friend Andrea Beca likes to take on 365-day projects and challenge herself to try something new. She's a lady who gets shit done and one of my biggest inspirations. You may know her as the writer/director from Kissing Habit Films and the creator of the FM(Dating)L series that I star in with the hilarious Trent Wilkie.

This year, Andrea is taking on a ukulele project with Miss Cherry Wood (the ukulele) and has started adding duets to her line-up! So far, she's nailed Anyone Else But You with Adam Rozenhart and melted my heart with The Moon Song co-starring Vance Avery. I was super excited to pick a song and join Andrea in her latest challenge. In the spirit of Halloween, hope y'all enjoy!

October 23, 2014

It's time to get stoked for Halloween and we've got a fun-filled weekend in Edmonton for you to do just that!

Treasure Hunting!

REAL: A page from The Book of the Dead  at the Telus World of Science Edmonton.
This Saturday, October 11, the Telus World of Science Edmonton is unleashing the Indiana Jones & The Adventure of Archaeology exhibit! I was fortunate to be invited for a preview of one of my favourite Spielberg Franchises and as a filmmaker who grew up on these movies (and had a huge crush on Harrison Ford) you can imagine my excitement!

Playing Dead in Photographs

I am so impressed with the participation on my first Instagram photo challenge for October! The submissions are super creative and I'm delighted by each post - you guys rock!! I'm a big fan of prompts to unleash creative expression and I utilize them often as a writer. To challenge myself as a filmmaker, I'm pushing myself to learn more about photography and visual storytelling and it's much more fun with friends. Thanks so much for playing along and inspiring me!

Fresh Works from Edmonton Filmmakers

I had the pleasure of being a return Judge for Metro Shorts last night. Presented by Mostly Water Theatre, the event is now in its seventh season and last night was possibly the best one yet!

Scream Queen Halloween!

It's October! And to celebrate my favourite month of the year - and my birthday - I would like to challenge YOU to participate in an Instagram photo-a-day challenge with me! I've created daily prompts to get your creative juices flowing and will be giving away cool prizes to get you pumped for Halloween!

We're All Monsters

Music is an integral part of filmmaking and I often turn to my collection before I start writing. I use it to envision scenes, to connect to the emotions and to explore the inner psyche of the characters that come to me. This songza playlist is all about our inner monsters, our manifestations of darkness that we project as "the Other." It's also a kick-ass Halloween mix, so enjoy and get in touch with your dark side.

The Strange New World: Transmedia

Collectively, we're reaching a point in our society very similar to the early 1900's, when electricity came on the scene and started changing everything. We are undergoing a mass transformation and people are having strong reactions to it. Some of you may be feeling the resistance and some of you may prefer to sit in the dark.

Hurlfest, the Bastard of Norwalk

So I've been quarantined in my house with the Norwalk Virus. I'll spare you the horrific details, but let's just say there were moments in the 8 hour hurlfest where I wished I was a spy with a suicide pill tucked under my tongue. I gave Linda Blair a run for her money, that's for sure.

From Basement to Big Screen and Beyond!

If you missed the Pixel Blue College Forum at the 2014 Fringe Festival, I'll try my best to fill you in. I had the pleasure of being on a panel with Kevin Hayes, Ainsley Hillyard, Andrea Beca and Matt Schuurman to talk about the creative process!

Exciting Canadian Films at TIFF

Oh Canada! Where the weather is fucking cold and our filmmakers are dark, dark, dark...

Hanging with the House of Heathens

The House of Heathens is a collective of super talented guys who make insane films together. They also live in one house together; a very swank horror enthusiast pad nestled in Edmonton's vintage suburbia circa 1980's. Which is completely fitting when you see their stylistic obsession with the era. They even have an etch-a-sketch in the living room.

Horror of the Future

Transmedia is the buzz word these days and I'm really excited about it's potential. As a content creator and an avid story consumer, immersive experiences are like ghost stories told at Brownie Camp that you remember years later when you're alone in the woods. I still avoid outhouses because of the "Worm Man."

Master Classes

Nic Pizzolatto & Dan Harmon, representing two sides of my creative expression.
The Banff World Media Festival. The conference can feel a lot like a mystical dream, you're up in a castle surrounded by mountains... The Fonz will causally walk past you. You'll meet a famous House Wife of [insert shithole here].

Momma Said Knock You Out

Praise to Brian Viveros. You're Rad.

We are all characters in a "coming-of-age" movie. In our low points, when we feel stuck and not sure what to do next, we need a confidence montage.

Advice for Actresses

Think you're ready for a close-up? Not so fast...

Once upon a time, a Steampunk enthusiast approached me at the Pure Speculation Festival and asked me, "How can I be a film actress?" Yikes. That's a really hard question. I think I replied, "uhhhhhhhhh... " while suppressing the rising urge to scream, "No child! Run for the hills!" So I've been thinking and cynicism aside - or as much as humanly possible - here is my advice:

May 21, 2014

Towers Be A Tumbling.

The world of film and television is rapidly changing. The old institutions are crumbling. The gatekeepers who have stood in the way between creators and consumers are becoming irrelevant and powerless. Broadcasters - your days are numbered. Prepare to join the dinosaurs.

The Sounds of WOLF COP
Click the Tape.
"It can only be described as early Sabbath meets John Carpenter."
- Lowell Dean, Director of Wolf Cop
A sneak peak of the Wolf Cop soundtrack has been released. If it doesn't make you want to rip your clothes off and tear into someone's throat, then check your pulse! Saskatoon's Shooting Guns create an atmosphere of adrenaline fueled bad decisions and resulting mayhem. It's absolutely awesome.

An unexpected treat, "The Wolf Cop" by Evil Ebenezer and Factor. There is something terribly badass about the mix of werewolves and rap. Fangs and hydraulics, I think we'll see a new trend this summer. These sound treats will be available on Blood Red Vinyl. I just shivered. Place your orders here.

I'm Trying to Love You Edmonton, But You're Making it Really Hard.

A zombie starves to (double) death in downtown Edmonton...
Every city I've traveled to, I'm impressed by two things. 1) The vibrancy of their downtown and 2) the preservation and re-imagining of historical buildings. This is a pretty pathetic list - trust me, in my travels in Calgary and New York in the last few years, I'm impressed by a lot of things, but the above mentioned should be a given in a city with a million or so people living in it. Right?

April 25, 2014

Here Comes the FUZZ!

Friday, June 6th - Canada will be known for more than it's Beaver. WOLF COP will hit the theatres after a crazy ride with the CineCoup Film Accelerator. Buy your ticket here! You also get bonus materials... a Wolf Cop figurine, blood red vinyl, a graphic novel... if I haven't convinced you yet, keep reading.

Rocking Rondo & The Hunt

Every so often you stumble upon a new and exciting character that thrills you to the core. This is my Christmas Morning!

March 21, 2014

Keep it Indie

I've been tasting the word INDEPENDENCE this week and really letting its meaning swish around in my head: showing a desire for freedom, not subject to control by others, not looking to others for one's opinions...

March 11, 2014

The Ides of March

March is looking pretty stellar I tell ya. Edmonton's film scene is really bringing it this month. Here's some highlights of things you should be aware of.

Thursday, March 13 - AMPIA Nominations Announced

The Nominees for the Alberta Film & Television Awards will be announced at 9:30am. Follow @YourAMPIA or visit the website Good luck to all my friends who submitted this year!

Friday, March 14 - The Last Video Store Fundraiser

Our fellow CineCoup alumni are moving forward with their feature film! Directors Tim Rutherford and Cody Kennedy and stars Josh Lenner and Kevin Martin will be in attendance. If you're a horror fan, please come! This is how we get things done in this city, pooling resources, giving our support, and thrashing to metal... Event details:

Saturday, March 15 - March Madness PD Day for Filmmakers

Velcrow Ripper, the award-winning documentary Filmmaker and Director of Occupy Love is coming to Edmonton to talk about revolutionary ways to make your film! Perfect timing? I think so...

Velcrow is the keynote speaker in a full day workshop presented by AMPIA and sponsored by Telefilm, Edmonton Art's Council, and Alberta Film. It will be a crash course in the industry with the top Alberta producers, writers and directors on-site to inspire you about bringing your work to the next level.

More Kissing at Kissing Habit Films

SO excited! Trent Wilkie and I have signed on to another FM(Dating)L series with Director Andrea Beca and Kissing Habit Films! Last month, Cooties tied for first place at the Metro Shorts Film Festival and debuted at the Telus World of Science's Dark Matters Film Festival. Watch below.

Kids Say The Darnedest Things

If you're honest with yourself, children frighten you. And they should. It's no coincidence the masters of horror utilize children to bring out the goose-flesh (Think: The Shining, Insidious, The Omen, The Ring, The Poltergeist, The Exorcist...) Why are children so scary? Because they remember who they used to be.

Unlocking the Secrets of the Universe with Reality TV

We all have our guilty pleasures. When I'm in the process of hitting a writing deadline, I clean the slate with some really questionable choices. I don't want to watch anything that engages my brain, because that poor slop has been spent. I need my heart engaged. I need to feel again in order to come back to the world.

February 14, 2014

Big Love!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! My heart is just bleeding love right now for all of the amazing people that were part of #DarkMatters at the Telus World of Science last night. What an amazing community of freaks we have in Edmonton!

See photos here:

And a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out and supported the film festival!  Let me tell you, it's TERRIFYING to put your work out there to a bunch of strangers. It really takes a lot of guts. The work showcased last night ranged from brand new filmmakers to pros about to launch their first feature with national distribution, so I really have to thank the amazing audience for showing such love and support to these hardworking artists!

Speaking of hardworking artists, Andrea Beca - who debuted her film "Cooties" last night, is releasing her first short film "Flat Life" online today! It's the best VD treat ever. The film stars Ainsley Hillyard and is inspired by a true, heart-wrenching story! Watch it now then head over to Kissing Habit Films and leave her some love notes!

Thursday, February 13 from 7-10pm
Telus World of Science
Edmonton, AB
Please Wear a Costume!

Little may you know... once a month, the Telus World of Science Centre hosts Adults Only parties where  you can explore all the exhibits without having to push a toddler out of the way. And there is seriously cool stuff for us to dabble in. Last month, I was privileged to meet a real owl and play with his regurgitated pellets to look for skulls and bones! It was like sifting through black cotton candy to find dead treats. AMAZING! So when I was asked to be part of the John Cox "How to Make a Monster" exhibit and bring some of my strange friends along with me, I said, "but of course..." in a British accent. Like a lady.

It's a Monster's Ball & Costume Party with all kinds of fun treats for the horror enthusiast or horr-curious! Vance Avery  - who you may have seen BLOWING THINGS UP on the Discovery Channel, will be making sure you have the absolute time of your life! I seriously feel like Stephan from SNL when I describe this to you. It will definitely be Edmonton's coolest parties of 2014. We'll have:
  • Organ Dissections (Brains, Eyeballs, Hearts!)
  • Weird Creatures (real Spiders, Snakes, Oh MY!)
  • Science Experiments with Fire and Electricity (Hollar at ya, Tesla)
  • Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream
  • The Bizarre Monster Creations of Travis Shewchuck from Ravenous EFX
  • Get Zombiefied by The Theatre Garage
  • Spooky Photobooth
  • Shut up, do I have to go on? Buy your tickets already!
  • And...

Film Screening!

Yeah. There's THAT too! I have curated an INCREDIBLE short film festival of local Canadian talent. We are taking over the Star Theatre to show you some really impressive work from people you should know.

We have the Edmonton Premiere of Skeleton Girl by Bleeding Art Industries, directed/animated by Steven Hanulik and Leo WieserThe Hunt by Insurrection Films, The Last Video Store by local heroes Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford (House of Heathens), Cover by  Tito Guillen (Hyperphotonic Films), a little vamp comedy a la Truckstop Bloodsuckers and a special promo of the upcoming feature film WOLF COP directed by Lowell Dean (Echolands Creative).

ALSO: We will be showing some the official selection of the Edmonton Short Film Festival Suprise Party Directed by Jamie Scott and the debut of Andrea Beca's new short COOTIES, starring myself & the hilarious Trent Wilkie (who I know much better now... you'll see...)

IF YOU NEED A COSTUME... and I suggest you DRESS to IMPRESS, the beautiful Ghouls at the Theatre Garage will give you 20% off your rental.

Hope to see you all there!

The Dark Ugly Business of Giving Birth

The Metaphorical Birth Canal
"When one door closes another always opens, but the hallways are a bitch."
It's a phrase Momma Jane has repeated to me many times. I often refer to my creative endeavours as giving birth. It's a spiritual process that follows a natural order, and I don't like to follow the rules.

Turn it Up: "Nightlife"

Trevor Anderson just dropped a new music video for The Wet Secrets starring Joe Flaherty (SCTV, Freaks and Geeks) as Count Floyd! There's a delightful twilight spoof with Mathew Hulshof playing Robert BATtinson and Nicola Elbro as a lazy-eyed Kristen BOOwart. Love it!

Directed by Trevor Anderson. Produced by Katrina Beatty. Executive Producer Jason Kapalka. Director of Photography, Peter Wunstorf, ASC.

January 10, 2014

An Evening at Metro Cinema!

Last night I was getting all Judgey at the Metro Shorts presented by Mostly Water Theatre! Here's the scoop: local filmmakers submit a 5 minute production then immediately come up on stage to be critiqued and voted on by the audience. Yikes! The winner gets $100.00, lots of high 5's and the key to the City. Well, we're still working on that last bit.

January 8, 2014

Work It

I think Britney Spears says it best when she auto-tunes, "You Gotta Work Bitch." And how!
My feet first hit the pavement to help a dear friend with the world's best mustache get elected into City Council. I met some great people, some rude condo dwellers (twats, really) and it ended in a flurry of light saber celebrations. He got the job. Go McKeen! Go Iveson!

Thanks to Cristian Munoz & Edmonton Culture for this wicked photo!

Then off to moonlighting at a hotel where I got to meet my first real-life strippers from Niagara Falls! And YES, they DO shop at SIRENS. It was a fascinating character study to hear what it's like to be raised by the Hell's Angels (as apposed to down the block from them). We made plans to launch our own cotton candy nail-polish glosses labeled with clever euphemisms: Just the Tip, Pearl Necklace... But sadly, the girls got evicted for... um... "extra circular activities"  before anything concrete was laid. Pun?

I miss them. I'm glad I introduced them to Shark Week and am absolutely honoured they were shocked/disgusted with my depraved mind, because you know these women have seen EVERYTHING.

Now I'm settling back into a 9-5 Communications Job in the AB Film Studios, where I'm greeted daily by my favourite Hollywood Icons: James Dean, Marilyn Munroe, Charlie Chaplin, & Audrey Hepburn. The building is owned by a delightful eccentric who collects movie paraphernalia and designed the boardroom after The Dark Night Rises. Check out the ceiling, it's Gotham City! Yeah, I squeal every time I go in.

The building has also housed Jessica Alba, Billy Bob, the sketch-comedy show SCTV, Tiny Plastic Men, and most recently, Dylan McDermott's latest release, FREEZER. When you need a man trapped in a meat locker by Russian thugs, you don't BUILD the freezer, you just come to Edmonton, AB.

December also gifted me with a second chance at Halloween! I think I had H1N1 the first time around, so the opportunity to slap the Spider Lady costume on and be an extra in Trevor Anderson's music video was awesome! The star of the video was Mr. Joe Flaherty, reprising his role of Count Floyd. We had so much fun behind the scenes that I can't wait until the video is released. Stay tuned to twitter and Dirt City Films as the "Nightlife" video should be dropping very soon!

Put some 3-D Glasses on. Photo by Fish Griwkowsky
Now with all that settled, it's time to return to "THE" work, as in the scripts. I had a very prophetic dream and was visited by a Muse. Spooky stuff. Stephen King talks about this all the time, channeling the creative, so it's time to get back to development before any ghosts of scripts past come to haunt and harass me.

Can you imagine? Behind hunted by your own creations? Holy shit balls.
